The convergence of art and artificial intelligence has given birth to a fascinating exhibition in Kolkata, “AI Art on Canvas,” curated by Debashis, a retired IAS officer-turned-AI artist. This showcase, which opened at ITC Sonar yesterday, features stunning AI-generated artworks that challenge traditional notions of creativity and authorship.

The exhibition presents artworks created using sophisticated algorithms and deep learning models, each representing a fusion of human imagination and machine intelligence. Renowned painter Suvaprasanna, who inaugurated the exhibition, expressed his support for innovative art, stating, “The artist community must explore technological options to extend the frontiers of art. This is already happening globally.”

During the inauguration, Facino Nicolas, Director, Alliance Française of Bengal; Sanjoy Chatterjee, Chair, NASSCOM Regional Council, East; Partha Maharaj, Secretary, Vivek Tirtha Ramakrishna Mission; Yuvika Dhar, Founder, Vedayogshala (India) joined Debashis Sen.

Debashis aims to bring sophistication and trendy art into public spaces, leveraging AI’s potential in creative works. “AI is effective for creative works in music, poetry, and art,” he said. “I select only the best from hundreds of AI-generated creatives, relying on my judgement and eyes”.

Each artwork is signed by the creator, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity and a unique QR code, enabling owners to verify the artwork’s authenticity on “My Art Registry,” an international website for artists.

The exhibition raises questions about the evolving role of technology in creativity and the future of art in the digital age. As Debashis’s artworks appreciate in value over time, they demonstrate the potential of AI-generated art to redefine traditional notions of art and creativity.
