Kolkata: In a significant step towards combating malnutrition and lifestyle diseases, CMRI Kolkata proudly hosted the launch of the Bengal chapter of the Poshan Dhara Association, an initiative dedicated to raising awareness about preventive nutrition. Founded in 2021 by Mr. T.N. Verma, the association has been at the forefront of advocating for the crucial role of dieticians in disease prevention and overall health improvement.
With the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and cancer, Poshan Dhara Association aims to bridge the gap by promoting balanced diets and sustainable nutrition practices. Recent statistics highlight alarming trends—over 70% of India’s urban population is either overweight or obese, while projections indicate that India will have 124.9 million diabetic individuals by 2045. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, CMRI Kolkata has collaborated with this mission to drive awareness and community engagement.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Ipsita Chakravarti, Dietician at CMRI Kolkata, said:
“At CMRI, we are committed to fostering a healthier society through evidence-based nutrition and preventive healthcare. Hosting the Bengal chapter of Poshan Dhara Association is a proud moment for us as it aligns with our vision of prioritizing patient outcomes and community well-being. We believe that empowering people with the right nutritional knowledge is key to reducing the burden of lifestyle diseases in India.”
Spokesperson from Poshan Dhara Association(PDA) Chapter Secretary, Bijoya Bhattacharjee and Joint Organising Secretary Sudeshna Maitra Nag echoed the same on the vision of PDA and CMRI
The launch event also featured a Continuing Nutrition Education (CNE) session, bringing together healthcare professionals, dieticians, and experts to discuss region-specific nutritional challenges and strategies for disease prevention. With this collaboration, CMRI Kolkata and Poshan Dhara Association reaffirm their shared commitment to building a healthier nation through informed dietary practices and preventive nutrition.
