Swayam is a Kolkata based feminist organisation working for the last 29 years and is committed to advancing women empowerment and ending inequality and violence against women and girls. Each year, Swayam observes the 16 Day International Awareness Drive against gender – based violence. This global programme, which starts on 25th November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) and ends on 10th December (Human Rights Day) aims to raise awareness about violence against women and girls and is observed all across the world.
South Asia has a long-standing history of entrenched gender inequalities, stemming from intersecting identities of caste, class, religion, ethnicity, and sexuality. Despite notable progress in health, education, and economic participation, gender gaps persist, as patriarchal values favour men’s access to opportunities and control over resources. These disparities begin even before birth and span all stages of life, undermining the agency and rights of women and girls across the region. Yet, South Asia also boasts a rich heritage of feminist movements and women-led advocacy efforts that have made remarkable strides in securing women’s rights, promoting equality, and addressing violence against women.
Each year Swayam observes 30th November as South Asian Women’s Day for Peace, Justice, Human Rights and Democracy under the aegis of Sangat, a South Asian feminist network. On this day, civil society organizations across the region organize events to celebrate sisterhood, solidarity and address common concerns of conflicts and violence in the region. Observing South Asian Women’s Day on November 30th is a testament to the dedication of women across borders who fight for peace, justice, and democracy despite systemic barriers. This day, championed by the Sangat Network, allows civil society organizations throughout South Asia to unify their voices against regional conflict and violence while celebrating communal harmony, sisterhood, and solidarity.
In light of this, Swayam, Kolkata organized a cultural programme on the 30th of November 2024 in Kolkata which sought to raise awareness and inspire action towards gender equality, peace, solidarity, and communal harmony through cultural performances and speeches. The event is especially significant as it aligns with the South Asian Women’s Day, celebrated on November 30th — a day dedicated to advocating for peace, justice, democracy, and human rights across the region.
